After Bandra, Now Nmmt Begins New Service To Dindoshi In Mumbai

There more good news for bus commuters. Has introduced bus number 123 for its new service route from CBD to Dindoshi. The new bus service was officially commenced at the hands of State Excise and Non-Conventional Resources Minister Ganesh Naik at CBD Bus Depot.

Introduced its first bus service to Mumbai city by plying buses from CBD to Bandra. After receiving a good response from the commuters, it has decided to start service to another route – this time from CBD to Dindoshi. Bus number 123 of NMMT will be playing on this route. These buses, which have been acquired under the JNNURM Scheme, will be playing on various routes in Mumbai. The bus service from CBD to Dindoshi was officially inaugurated at CBD Belapur Bus Depot at the hands of State Excise and Non-Conventional Resources Minister Ganesh Naik. Navi Mumbai Mayor Anjani Bhoir was also present during the ceremony. Ganesh Naik, along with other members enquired about the routes the buses will be plying to. While speaking to the media, Ganesh Naik stated that this service would not be profitable to the transport body but will be beneficial for the commuters as well.

When questioned on how BEST makes creates hassles in Mumbai, the Minister stated that instead of competing, BEST should focus on improving its service. He also opined that in order to tackle the tussle between BEST, Transport Secretary and Transport Commissioner should have a talk with the respective officials and take a decision after listening to both the parties.

Manager Jitendra Papalkar gave an insight about the routes of the new bus service. Further speaking about the new routes he stated that the transport body is thinking of plying some buses out of the 10 buses on Dadar route. He was positive that like the bus services to Bandra, if this one would receive a good response.

When asked about the cold war between BEST, he stated that they believe in healthy competition but their vision is to provide good and efficient service. As far as ticket fares are concerned, he indicated that they might consider increasing them.

Launched its AC Volvo bus services from CBD Belapur to Bandra, BEST too began AC bus service. Now that NMMT has planned to go to Dindoshi, there are chances that the competition.

Seal Ashram celebrated its 10th anniversary celebrations in grand style and with immense enthusiasm. Seal Ashram in Panvel is a shelter for the destitute where the people lying on the streets, the poor and the needy are brought in by this trust to take care of. The ashram also shelters orphans, HIV AIDS patients and mentally retarded. In this endeavor of theirs, the trust has been able to provide food, clothing and education to the destitute till they can stand on their own feet. Completing 10 years of this mission of theirs, a grand celebration was held called the Seal Charity Festival which saw a huge crowd of people participating. For the audience, there was a bounty of musical artists who performed for them. From the guitarist, to the flutist and to the singer, all hearts were captured by their performance.

However, the one performance that won the hearts of the people and left them awestruck was the performance by the who created music with ordinary items like bisleri can. Amongst the dignitaries present were Excise Minister Ganesh Naik, actor Pooja Bhatt and founder of Seal Pastor Philips The guests were all praises of Seal and the performance.

State Excise Minister Ganesh Naik Orders Immediate Repair Work For Sanpada Bridge After Inspection

Looks like authorities have finally woken up to the dangers of weak bridges along rail routes post the Kopri incident. In the course, State Excise and Non-Conventional Resources Minister Ganesh Naik paid an inspection visit along with officials at the Sanpada Bridge that has been reeling under unsafe conditions for years. The Minister has ordered immediate repair work of the bridge.

Every year, Dutta Jayanti is organized on a grand scale on December 1st at the Dutt Temple at Sanpada. Lakhs of devotees from all over the city and nearby areas come at the temple for Dutt Jayanthi. And scores of these devotees use the Sanpada railway bridge to reach the temple. The Sanpada bridge that was built years ago jointly by CIDCO and Railways was never maintained post its construction. This is one of the reasons why the bridge reels under highly deplorable conditions. Continuous movement of trains on the rail routes underneath the bridge has led to it being in shaky conditions putting the lives of commuters using it at risk. For years the locals have been demanding that the bridge be repaired but all in vain. At last, State Excise and Non-Conventional Resources Minister Ganesh Naik visited the bridge for an inspection. He was accompanied by MP Dr. Sanjeev Naik, MLA Sandeep Naik, Commissioner Vijay Nahata, CIDCO Officer B K Hariya and others. During the visit Ganesh Naik was seen issuing instructions to carry out immediate reconstruction of the bridge. The locals of Sanpada had been appealing Ganesh Naik to pay attention to the condition of the bridge for a year now. Earlier Ganesh Naik had mooted the idea of a subway but now he opined that an escalator bridge would be a better option.

Since the plans of an escalator bridge would take time and Dutta Jayanthi is coming closer, Ganesh Naik ordered that authorities work of providing some support to the bridge for the festival. He also ordered that special care be taken on the festival day for the safety of devotees using the bridge. For this Ganesh Naik ordered a technical inspection of the bridge at the earliest.

Without mincing words, Ganesh Naik held CIDCO responsible for the present condition of the bridge. It is a known fact that there are many such bridges on rail routes on the city that CIDCO and Railways both refuse to repair passing the buck of responsibility on the other. Ganesh Naik said that if shortage of funds is the reason for this, then they would consider repairing them with JNNURM funds. Ganesh Naik said that there many flaws in CIDCO work, which would be corrected. Sanpada Bridge is one of the biggest issues that haunt locals. Hence it will be a wait and watch when this order of the Minister is executed by officials.

Born in 1469 A.D. at Tolevandi, some 30 miles from Lahore, the religion of Sikhism was founded is the result of his great vision, dedication and devotion. For the Sikhs it is a time of celebration. Men, women, and children, participated in this karseva as service to the community, cook food and distribute it in the 'Guru ka Langar', with the traditional 'Karah Prasad'. The Sikhs also visit gurudwaras where special programs are arranged and religious songs are sung in praise of guru nanak. A similar gathering was held at the Gurudwara at CBD Belapur where Thane Guardian Minister and Belapur MLA Ganesh Naik was present. He was welcomed with the traditional shawl and sword of the Sikhs. On the auspicious day of the Sikhs, a bridge was also inaugurated by Ganesh Naik making another walkway for the devotees of the gurudwara. On the questions of allegations of dynastic rule, he said that the voters of Navi Mumbai have given a fitting reply to these allegations by voting for progress and development. NCP Congress Belapur candidate Ganesh Naik beat his nearest poll rival BJP-Shiv Sena’s Suresh Haware with a margin of 12, 873 while Sandeep Naik has won from Airoli constituency with a margin of 11, 957.

Navi Mumbai does not want change – the voters have voted for continuity and progress – continuity of Ganesh Naik’s leadership in Navi Mumbai and his progressive thoughts. And this time voters have not just shown belief in Ganesh Naik’s leadership but have extended their faith to his son Sandeep Naik – the Congress-NCP candidate from Airoli constituency as well as both the father-son are the voters choice of MLA from Belapur and Airoli constituency. As the counting for the Belapur constituency began from 8 am at the counting center at Vashi, Ganesh Naik’s lead just kept increasing in every round. By the time the 22 rounds of counting ended, NCP-Congress candidate Ganesh Naik secured 59, 685 votes as against his nearest poll rival BJP-Shiv Sena candidate Suresh Haware’s 46812 votes, giving Ganesh Naik a victory with a margin of 12873 votes.

Speaking to the media post his victory, Ganesh Naik said that the voters of Navi Mumbai have proven that he is after all the people’s candidate. On the other hand all did not seem well in the Airoli constituency when the voting began.

Only when counting of votes began from Koperkhairane and reached to sectors of Vashi and Turbhe, did Sandeep Naik overtake the saffron candidate and at the end of the 23 rounds of counting emerged as the winner with a lead of 11957 votes. The total votes that Sandeep Naik garnered were 79075 as against the 67118 garnered by Vijay Chougule. Post his victory, Sandeep Naik thanked voters who showed confidence in the party leadership of NCP.

The tradition of secularism & communal harmony is the hallmark of the Naik family & it is being followed generation to generation. After the Lok Sabha elections, the state assembly elections had become the biggest challenge for the first family of Navi Mumbai. And neither the change mantra, nor dynastic rule or Congress rebels could change the results that have proven that the support to the Naik family is as heady and strong even now as it has been for 4 decades. IT WAS a clean sweep for the Nationalist Congress Party in Navi Mumbai with the father-son duo of Ganesh Naik and Sandeep Naik emerging victorious in Belapur and Airoli, the two Assembly constituencies in the satellite city.
While it was a smooth ride for three-term MLA and state excise, labour and environment minister Ganesh Naik against BJP's Suresh Haware, son Sandeep Naik faced nervous moments as Shiv Sena's Vijay Chougule steadily garnered more votes in the initial phase of the counting. Despite having lost to Sandeep's brother Sanjeev Naik in the Thane constituency in the recent Lok Sabha elections by over 40,000 votes, the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance had again fielded Airoli corporator Chougule to challenge the Naik supremacy.
In what seemed like a neck-to-neck fight in the first 15 rounds of counting, the battle tilted heavily in favour of NMMC standing committee chairman Sandeep Naik. In the remaining eight rounds towards the end, Chougule suffered serious setbacks in Bonkode, Kopar Khairne and large parts of Vashi.
Chougule, at one point, saw a lead of 2200 votes against Naik when votes from Airoli were being counted. In the end, however, out of the total of 1, 57,751 valid votes cast in the constituency, Naik got a lead of 11,957 votes. Naik got 79,075 votes while Chougule managed 67,118.
When asked the reason for not securing a good number of votes from Airoli, Sandeep said, "All party workers have worked equally hard in all places. It is just natural that some people have a stronghold in certain areas. But since a majority of voters have shown trust in me, I will try to win over the rest of them too," Sandeep said.
Chougule, a former right hand man of Ganesh Naik left the party to rejoin Shiv Sena in 2007.

Son Sandeep, a corporator since 2005, defeated Naik loyalist-turned-arch rival Vijay Chougule (47) in Airoli by 11,907 votes.
"I have always been the people's candidate and they have once again proved it," said Naik.
"Our victory proves that people identify with the ideals of Sharad Pawar and Sonia Gandhi and, at the local level, they have lots of affection for us."
Added Sandeep: "This victory is a vote for progress, secularism and peace."
Thursday's twin victories, combined with the fact that elder son Sanjeev (37) -- a former Navi Mumbai mayor -won a Thane Parliamentary seat in the national election held earlier this year, will boost Naik's status further within the NCP and cement the region's status as a family bastion.
The father-son duo successfully battled anti-incumbency, the emergence of the MNS and rebels candidates from the NCP and alliance partner Congress -- local Congress president Namdeo Bhagat (46) jumped into the fray as an Independent after he lost his ticket in seatsharing negotiations. The Naiks' main poll plank was development, with father and son repeatedly citing the Morbe Dam as a major achievement and promising more along the same lines.
The purchase of Morbe has made the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation -- where the NCP is in power too -- the first in the country to own its own dam.
With the pipelines ready, Navi Mumbai is now all set to receive 24x7 water supply, beating even neighbouring megalopolis Mumbai in this respect.
Other much-touted achievements include the 14-km ThaneBelapur Road Project, the only highway in the state on which no toll is levied, and the introduction of Volvo and CNG buses for public transport.
The NMMC is also planning to earn carbon credit by reducing methane gas emissions and converting garbage into fuel and fertiliser.
As for the future, the Naiks have promised an independent power generation project to ensure 24-hour power supply to the city.
Other promises include more vertical growth, especially for dilapidated buildings and no increase in taxes.

NCP-Congress alliance candidate Sandeep Naik registered victory in a cut-throat competition from the Airoli constituency on Thursday. He defeated Shiv Sena-BJP candidate Vijay Chauguley, political archrival of the Naiks, by 11,964 votes. Sandeep managed to get 79,075 votes out of the total 1,57,751 votes cast, while 67,118 voters favoured Chauguley.
'Airoli strongman' Chauguley made a good start in the initial rounds by taking good lead; however as the counting went on, Sandeep covered up the gap and after the 22 rounds of the counting, it became clear that Sandeep would represent the Airoli constituency in the House for the next five years.
The counting session was full of drama, in fact. Sandeep clinched 3,687 and 3,282 votes in seventh and eight rounds respectively, while Chauguley could garner 3,199 and 3,224 votes in those rounds. Still, at end of eighth round Chauguley had a lead of 815 votes. Thereafter, the margin remained neck-to-neck till the 14th round. However, from the 15th round onwards, Sandeep maintained a clear lead till the final round.
"I thank all those people who supported me from the beginning of my campaign. On Thursday, I was a bit tensed when came to know that Chauguley was leading in the initial stages. However, I was confident about winning the polls. Now, my duty will be to identify the needs of the public and work accordingly. I will try my level best to fulfil our agenda," said an excited Sandeep. When asked whether he is happy with the margin with which he won, he answered, "I am happy with the margin since there was no MNS candidate and still we won with good margin. This indicates that youths and new voters registered with EC put faith in me. My victory is equally due to all NCP corporators and workers who put lots of efforts to the win from the constituency."

Navi Mumbai puts faith in Ganesh Naiks

Thane district Guardian Minister and Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) candidate Ganesh Naik retained his Belapur seat registering 59,685 of the total 1,46,342 votes cast during October 13 assembly polls. Shiv Sena-BJP's joint candidate Suresh Haware, who was expected to give a tough fight to the NCP heavyweight, garnered 46,812 votes, while Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) candidate Rajendra Mahale and independent contestant Namdeo Rama Bhagat bagged 19,569 and 14,516 votes respectively.
Naik maintained lead over other candidates right from the first round of the counting, held at Vashi's Sacred Heart School on Thursday. The veteran leader registered 429 more votes than Haware who received 2,222 votes in the first round. The initial two rounds saw Naik and Haware competing closely, but from the fifth round, the gap between the votes bagged by the two widened with Naik getting 3327 votes and the builder-turned-politician scoring 1,429 votes at the end of the round. By seventh round, Naik's lead soared by 6,418 and after 14th round he was 9,619 votes ahead and continued the rally till the final 23rd round.
Though, Naik enjoys strong voters base in Belapur, entry of the renowned builder Haware into politics around six months ago had led to few uncertainties in the constituency as the BJP along with ally Shiv Sena, ensured the saffron alliance left no stone unturned to see Naik's defeat. Besides, the last minute rebel by Bhagat and other city Congress corporators triggered speculations whether Naik would be able to make it to the House for the fourth term.
Bhagat, was expected to eat into maximum of Naik's votes, but that could not be seen happening for the ex-Navi Mumbai Congress chief. On the other hand, MNS's Rajendra (Pappu) Mahale receiving votes close to 20,000, is considered as the crucial factor behind BJP-Sena losing the seat.
"The victory is due to the love and faith people of Navi Mumbai have in me. People have elected me because of the hard work put by me and our activists for the city through corporation and other channels," said an elated Ganesh Naik. When asked whether the lead he took was up to the expectations, he said, "For me winning the election is more important. If the lead is not as per the expectation, then it's because of the non co-operation by some of the city Congressmen. However, we are happy with whatever support we received from others in the Congress party."

The NCP though is not pleased with the low margin with which Ganesh Naik bagged the seat considering the thumping victory he had registered in the 2004 legislative assembly polls.
Birajdar said, "Winning is important for us, but as a party unit, we are not pleased with the low margin. It is high time we take corrective measures as we have worked really hard in every nook of the city, but could garner low votes in both the seats. It definitely is not a matter of pride for us. We will work harder so that we don't land in trouble during the municipal elections to be held over next few months."

A leader whose secular identity precedes him, it didn’t come as a surprise that more than 50 denominations of the Christian community came together to form the United Christians Forum of Navi Mumbai and pledged their support to NCP candidates from Belapur and Airoli Ganesh Naik and Sandeep Naik.

When it comes to communal harmony, peace, progress and security, Navi Mumbai has definitely set an ideal example for the country to see. And every time these qualities of Navi Mumbai are spoken of, one name that is given credited for establishing a secular image of Navi Mumbai; it’s Ganesh Naik. Perhaps that why, every election – communities across Navi Mumbai stand up to give unconditional support to Ganesh Naik – be it Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jain or the Christians. So did the Christian community in Navi Mumbai. For the first time ever, fathers and pastors representing over 50 denominations and churches of Navi Mumbai came together to form the “United Christian Forum” of Navi Mumbai. Father Johnson and the coordinator of the forum Brian D’Souza informed us that they had brought to the attention of Ganesh Naik, their biggest issue of burial grounds. Brian D’Souza added that the community feels that no one can understand their problems better than Ganesh Naik and his son.

He added that it was the credit of Ganesh Naik’s practice and belief in the religion of humanity that like other communities in Navi Mumbai, even the Christian community lived in peace in Navi Mumbai.

Ganesh Naik's vision, conception and development inspiring leadership has led to several significant projects being taken up by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and civic services being rendered.
Water Supply: Ensured adequate water supply for the city for the next 50 years by transferring Morbe dam for Navi Mumbai from Maharashtra Jeevan Pradikharan (MJP). 24x7 water supply begun in Nerul, Sanpada, Juinagar and CBD-Belapur.
Transportation: Concretised 14-km-six-lane Thane-Belapur Road. Work on the four flyovers on the highway will complete soon. A resolution has been passed for purchase of 120 CNG buses by NMMT. Work is on at Turbhe bus depot for the first CNG filling station in city. The Thane-Belapur-Nerul rail service has started. A women special service's been initiated on Vashi-Panvel and Panvel-CST routes. Efforts are on at the Central government level to speed up work on the proposed Navi Mumbai international airport.
Health: Airoli and Nerul will get 100-bed hospitals soon. Free medical services are provided to the senior citizens in the NMMC hospitals.
Education: Constructed 30 civic schools in the past three years.
House and building improvement: Secured the orders for granting 2.5 FSI for re-construction of CIDCO constructed dilapidated buildings.
Slum improvement: handed over homes to 154 slum dwellers absolutely free. Succeeded in getting the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) scheme.
Developmental Projects
* Three world standard Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) have been set up at Airoli, Vashi and Nerul (280 MLD). STPs will be commissioned in Koparkhairane, Sanpada and CBD.
* Modern dumping ground's been set up in Turbhe.
Civic services: Footpaths, concrete roads etc have been provided in the APMC area. Senior citizens have been provided with community centre’s in Vashi, Airoli and Sanpada. Has approved a resolution for underground electric wiring in 29 villages.
Janta Darbar: People's issues were resolved through efforts that conformed to the laws of the land.
Project Affected People: Got the orders for regularisation of need based extensions of houses in villages.
Civic security
* A 52-metre-high Bronto skylift vehicle to fight fire in high rises, an additional 32 metre high skylift vehicle provided to the fire personnel. Plot for fire station allotted in Nerul.
* Number of police beat chowkies increased. Secured an independent RTO office (MH-43) for Navi Mumbai at Kopri. The 2,500 sqft court at CGO in Belapur will soon be shifted to the building next to Konkan Bhavan for the benefit of public.
Unemployed: Public service centres have been established for the unemployed.
Labour Welfare: Made a provision for common wages for contract workers of NMMC. Implemented sixth pay commission for civic employees.
Environment: Developed plan to solve problem of water pollution at pilgrim centres Alandi, Pandharpur, Shani-Shingnapur etc. Implemented non-degradable waste disposal act to solve issue of plastic and non-degradable waste disposal. Artificial ponds for immersion of idols during Ganeshotsav have been developed.
Sports and arts: Has been holding sports festival under the aegis of Navi Mumbai Krida Sankul. Chitrabharti, a dist-level painting competition in which one lakh students participate, is organised under the aegis of Navi Mumbai Kala Sankul every year.
Women upliftment: Shops for women in CBD, Shiravane and Karave village.
Special Scheme: Decision taken of not increasing property taxes, water charges and cess for next 20 years.
Ambedkar Memorial: Project sanctioned to construct Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial at Airoli.

Power Generation: Will set up independent electric power generation project to ensure uninterrupted power in city.
Education: Will launch a scheme to provide free education in municipal schools till graduation level.

Medical Services: 300-bed super specialty hospitals at nominal rates for patients recommended by NMMC. Public Private Participation has already led to Hiranandani Hospital coming to city. 10 pc of its hospital beds will be reserved for needy patients recommended by NMMC.
Seashore and creeks: Will works for the protection mangroves along the creek areas. beaches of Vashi, Nerul and CBD will be beautified. Old dilapidated jetties at various villages in the city will be reconstructed.
Senior Citizens: Help will be taken from technically qualified senior citizens to improve functioning of NMMC, to complete developmental projects in the best possible manner.
Self-employment: New employment and self-employment opportunities for the youth will be explored. Will set up an Industrial Training Centre for women across city.
Minority Welfare: Will implement the 15 point programme announced by the Central govt for minorities. Will implement recommendations of Sachar Committee and Justice Rangnath Misra Commission. Will erect a memorial of the great freedom fighter Maulana Azad. Will also construct a community hall along with it for Muslim community. Will give priority to starting at least one Urdu school in each ward.
Will construct markets for mutton and chicken shops on node wise in Navi Mumbai. Where required, provide land for burial ground. Also provide amenities and facilities through NMMC for existing and proposed burial grounds. Cultivate the right environment for people of all religious communities to co-exist in newly developed areas.
Hoarding policy: Will launch hoarding policy that will clearly spell out the designated hoarding sites and the size and shape of the hoarding as per the road.
Footpath: Under Footpath Vision, based on the size and shape of the road, the footpath's design, height and type will be worked out. Footpaths will be senior citizen and physically challenged-friendly.
Swimming pool: A plot has been designated in Sector 12 of Vashi for a swimming pool. An indoor stadium too has been planned at the location.
Library: Establish a library with multi-media and audio-visual gadgets along with CDs and DVDs.
park, garden and auditorium: An amusement park project has been approved near Mahape. A botanical garden spread over 240 acres of land has been planned at Adavli-Bhutavli. Will build auditorium at Airoli, Ghansoli and new NMMC HQ on Palm Beach Road.

Entrance gate: These entry point structures will be built at Thane, Vashi village and CBD Belapur.

The huge potholes on the road and the presence of heavy vehicles on the higlavay led to several fatal accidents which made riding two wheelers and driving smaller vehicles a dangerous proposition.
It was in this context that Shri Ganesh Naik decided to have a six-lane concrete road on the highway to be built by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) with help from the Central government.
At the time, not many believed the project would be possible due to the numerous hurdles it had to encounter.
There were the issues of companies, land and encroachments along the highway, issues of slum rehabilitation etc. that had to be resolved by NMMC to get the project going. Not many gave the project much of a chance.
Shri Ganesh Naik, however remained a pillar of strength for NMMC, taking up problematic issues at the government level and also finding just solutions to the issues of the locals. He took personal interest in the completion of the project.
The highway is of great significance for industries in the region who use it to ferrying goods and materials and also for transporting consignments to the JNPT port. The concretization of the highway has helped them greatly as the travelling time on the highway has reduced from the previous 1 - 1 ½ hr to just 20-25 minutes now. Driving too has become much safer.
While people in the country today are burdened with inflation and unemployment, Shri Ganesh Naik has provided reHef to the citizens of Navi klumbai by ensuring that taxes in the city have not been raised for several years now and yet development has continued.
The Thane-Belapur highway is the only six lane concretised highway in the country on which toll is not levied. Yet, there has been no compromise on the standard and quality of construction of the highway The quality of construction of this highway was proved when despite the diversion of Mumbra highway traffic to this road, the additional load did not have any effect on it. To ensure long lasting quality of work, NMMC Standing Committee chairman Sandeep Naik himself inspected the road work regularly and issued orders accordingly to NMMC officials. This has resulted in top quality work on the road that is shining today It is Shri Ganesh Naik's huge contribution to the progress and development of Navi Mumbai that has earned him the sobriquet of the city's architect. The settlers in the region while driving on this road experience the fruits of such strong and inspiring leadership in the city Shri Ganesh Naik, by ensuring a toll free highway in his constituency has earned loads of appreciation from the residents of Navi Mumbai and Thane.
To prevent accidents at pedestrian crossings in Rabale, Ghansoli and Kopar Khairane and to ensure smooth flow of traffic, work on four flyovers in the reglon was taken up. That work is in its final stages now Twin directional street lights on the 14 km highway, dense greenery, flyovers and foot over bridges at crossings, the magnificent corporate buildings along the road, the competing Thane-Belapur local trains will all make a drive on the road seem as an exhilarating journey in a foreign locale.

The tragic tales of apartment owners living in dilapidated CIDCO buildings across Navi Mumbai is not different from the other. Some are living in conditions that are threat to human occupancy while others are living in make-shift arrangements – all residents living how dreams of a home turned into nightmares.

FSI to CIDCO built apartments reeling under dilapidated conditions is perhaps the most burning issue that haunts Navi Mumbai today. And its not like the issue has never been taken up – problem is it’s been taken up far too often; mostly during elections. May be that’s why the victims of CIDCO’s sub standard constructed apartments are loosing faith but the first ray of hope that they’d get relief from the deplorable living conditions came when Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik had pursued the issue of FSI to CIDCO apartments during the Chief Minister’s visit to Navi Mumbai in June 2009.

And with Ganesh Naik persistently following up the matter with the Chief Minister’s office, in August came the announcement that the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in a meeting with Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik had given in-principle approval of 2.5 FSI to dilapidated CIDCO apartments. Post the Guardian Minister’s announcement; his opponents are terming it as just another point to score with the public prior to elections citing various reasons, one being the case against re-development work pending in High Court. But the petitioner of the case Rahul Thakur says that they were never against re-development work. Their case in High Court is to ensure that a policy is floated for uniform development of actually dilapidated buildings.

On the contrary, Rahul Thakur believes that the decision will benefit not only the owners of dilapidated CIDCO homes but even common buyers. Unlike all the previous assurances and promises, Thane Guardian Minister’s announcement is of credible value. This is because Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik has already set a precedent on this front with the re-development of C-Type Ganesh Towers in Sector 1, Vashi. The C Type apartments of Navi Mumbai were just like any CIDCO apartments that reeled under inhuman conditions and even posed as a threat to residents of the building.
Everyone is aware that despite the obstacles and opposition that the C Type redevelopment project faced, Ganesh Naik pioneered the work and NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik worked on ensuring that the re-development work happened in the legal frame. Within two years of the demolition of the C Type dilapidated buildings, the towers were erected. The C Type also became the only reconstructed building to get the NMMC’s OC. At that time speaking to the media, Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik recalled how the apartment owners of C Type had approached him with the issue of the dilapidated conditions of their apartments and he had promised them relief.

No points for guessing that the residents of C Type Ganesh Tower residents, who saw Ganesh Naik work against all odds to ensure that their redevelopment project happened now staunchly believe that only Ganesh Naik can make redevelopment with 2.5 FSI a reality for dilapidated CIDCO apartments. And perhaps seeing the testimonies of the C Type Ganesh Tower residents, even JN Type apartment owner’s voice faith in the leadership of Ganesh Naik.

A determined Ganesh Naik says that he wants to ensure that the success he achieved with the C Type apartments in Vashi is replicated for all dilapidated CIDCO buildings. While critics and Ganesh Naik opponents might continue to term the 2.5 FSI announcements as an election stunt but with the municipal elections to follow the assembly elections, Ganesh Naik will have no option but to fulfill his commitment making it a win win situation for apartment owners and common buyers.

Until now residents of JN Type and those living in other dilapidated CIDCO have been giving only hollow promises and false hopes. But again in five years, the time has come for residents to exercise their right. The time to vote the candidate they think has the capability, ability, work and capacity to make their dreams of new homes meeting a happy ending of becoming a reality.

As passenger comfort becomes an ever-higher priority, Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport commenced its air-conditioned bus services between Navi Mumbai and Bandra. Despite facing stiff resistance from the BEST for starting air-conditioned bus services on the Belapur-Bandra route, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport under the visionary guidance of Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik and leadership of NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik, introduced the additional service, which is not just turning out to be a profitable route for them but also a cool ride for the commuters. To know how cool this ride was we traveled from Vashi to Bandra.

While we were sweating out in the heat, the moment the 501 Belapur to Bandra bus arrived and its door slid open, we were welcomed with a waft of cool air. Red and low-floored, the bus looked as sleek as ever. Once inside, it was as cool as a Rajdhani Express while the ticket fair very un-Rajdhani. We had to pay just Rs 30 from Vashi and usually those traveling from Belapur have to pay Rs 45. The scene inside was that of wide aisle, really large windows and plush seats. There was an emergency exit, a first aid kit, yellow painted handles and carpeted floor. Mumbai and its dust clouds swirled past outside the window making us feel like a tourist who was sightseeing around Incredible India in an air-conditioned bubble. No dust getting into our ears, no strange sweat dripping onto our arms and no smelly body odours assaulting our nostrils, what’s more, soothing music played out of the deck. Even when the bus stopped to pick up passengers, there was no jhatkas or jerks, with all looking chilled out as if they had found nirvana.

Like the commuters, we were in awe of the bus service provided by NMMT. The transport body procured the buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission after many passengers had requested them to start bus services connecting the satellite city to Mumbai. Later, the bus was running over the famous Bandra bridge, the sea looking blue and the air feeling clean. Soon, the door slid open at Bandra railway station. We were out of the bus in the heat and grime of incredible Mumbai and with distress, wondered why did Bandra come so soon?

Just seeing the sheer adulation with which hundreds of people greet him when he arrives at his White House office, is indication enough of his popularity - and connection - with the masses. Not for nothing, the man has made it to the record books for his landslide victory margins in past Assembly polls. Even as he gears up for another term as MLA - and who knows, the state's deputy chief minister's chair - Ganesh Naik shares his thoughts in this exclusive interview.

Q. Dynastic politics - that's the word on everyone's mouth. What's your reaction?
A. When Lala Amarnath was the Indian captain and both his sons played for the country, it was not because they were brothers, but because they were players of caliber. And same is the case with the Pathan brothers in today's Indian team. Or take the Mangeshkar family. Can we say only Lata Mangeshkar will be allowed to sing and others in the family cannot sing? And who are these handful of people to talk about dynastic politics, when lakhs of voters are making the choice on the basis of the person's ability and not his lineage? Let the people of Navi Mumbai decide whether the Naiks are capable of serving them or not. Having said that, both my sons, Sanjeev and Sandeep, have an impeccable track record in public life, serving the people of this city and growing from the grassroot level.
Q. You have been the satellite city's first - and only - tall leader. Does that put more pressure on you to take up the cause of Navi Mumbai at the state-level?
A. Why talk about state level. Now, Navi Mumbai has its MP (son Sanjeev Naik), who is taking up its cause at the national level. Our MP is part of the 20-member Urban Development Committee and we expect him to get funds allotted for development of the satellite city. Similarly, we will do whatever it takes at the state level or the civic level to ensure overall development and progress of Navi Mumbai.
Q. Not counting Chhagan Bhujbal, you are probably the only person who has quit the Shiv Sena and grown from strength to strength. The Sena must surely be regretting losing you.
A. First of all, Bhujbalsaab is a senior leader of our party and I can't even be talked about in the same breath. What is more important is that I have been able to do my duties that I set out to do in public life. The corporation is in NCP's control, our MP is from NCP and if both the MLAs are also from NCP, we will be able to work for the city without any hindrance from any quarter.
Q. Your vision for Sanjeev Naik was to send him to the Parliament, which you have. What's your vision for Sandeep Naik?
A. It's not my vision; but our leader Pawarsaab's vision. He is intelligent enough to understand that if we win both the seats in Navi Mumbai, it will be a major boost for the party's growth in the metropolis in the years to come. He has considered many factors before entrusting us with the responsibility of contesting both the seats.
As far as my individual plans are concerned, I plan to retire from active politics in the next ten years and turn to social activity in a worker's role, leaving the electoral politics to the two brothers. And I think ten years is enough time to implement all the plans that I have envisioned for the satellite city of Navi Mumbai.
Q. One of your key pre-election achievements was securing the 2.5 FSI for redevelopment of dilapidated (like JN1) buildings. When will the work actually start?
A. I expect the work to commence by April 2010. It's a huge project, and the work will take place in phases, one node and one sector at a time. It's not only about increasing the FSI; the civic infrastructure will also have to be upgraded, be it water supply, drainage or access roads. The village areas will be systematically developed and aesthetically merged with the subsequently built urban spaces, lending an uniform look to the planned city.
Q. Talking about villages, isn't the villagers-versus-outsiders issue a ticking social time bomb, waiting to erupt sooner or later?
A. This entire villagers-versus-outsiders concept has been created by interested, divisive factions in the city. I was really upset during the Ghansoli riots and took lot of pains to make people realize that there will be no development if we fight with each other. Neither can the new residents flourish without integrating the original inhabitants, nor can the natives prosper without openly accepting the newcomers to the city. But overall, not only are villagers and outsiders co-existing peacefully, but also people from all communities and religions are living happily, without any fear, in Navi Mumbai.
Q. How do you feel when people like Namdeo Bhagat who have literally grown in front of you are contesting against you today?
A. We are living in a democracy; every man has a right to contest in the election. And let the people decide whom they want as their representative. Having said that, these bunch of Congressmen are not real rebels, but mere opportunists. And the people of Navi Mumbai are wise enough to know that they are neither fighting for the people, nor for the party, but just fending for themselves.
Q. And do you have anything to say about BJP's candidate Suresh Haware?
A. I have heard from people that Suresh Haware is staying in Navi Mumbai for the past 20 years, but we have come to know about his existence only in the past 3-4 months. Now, suddenly he has made up his mind to serve the people of this city and he is all over the place.
Q. But doesn't it bother you when these new comers make unrealistic promises to woo the voters?
A. (Smiles). Unfortunately for them, we have done such fantastic work for this city on every front - be it water supply, drainage system, connectivity, transportation, roads, low rates of taxes and high quality of life - that it takes absolutely unrealistic promises for them to even knock on the doors of the voters. And the voters know that. Will they trust someone who has delivered on every count for the past twenty years, or will they hand over their fate to someone who makes up his mind to serve people overnight.

Even as the candidates contesting October 13 assembly elections are trying their best to garner as many votes as possible to ensure their victory, its grass root presence of the candidates which will be the decisive factor in the forthcoming election. Navi Mumbai which comprises of two constituencies, Airoli and Belapur, has 22 candidates left in the fray. However, of these only few seem to be key players and apple in the eye of people, while others are considered either as beneficiary to someone and spoilsport for other.
NCP which has 48 corporators out of total 95 in NMMC enjoys stronghold at the civic level since party has representative in almost every part of the city. In 2005 civic polls, NCP contested without alliance and received 1,44,000 votes from across the city which is almost three times more than their opponents.
"Our strength is more than our opponents. During 2005 civic elections, we received 78,000 votes in Belapur while in Airoli we got 66,000 votes, while Shiv Sena and Congress received 15,000-18,000 votes in both the regions. This indicates that our presence is much more than them. Besides, after coming to power, we have processed and carried out developmental works worth Rs 10,000 crore. All these factors will definitely work in our favour," senior NCP leader from the city.
However, this assembly election is witnessing many changes in political circle, especially in Belapur constituency where sitting MLA Ganesh Naik is contesting as NCP-Congress alliance candidate and has been pitted against renowned builder and BJP-Shiv Sena candidate Suresh Haware. Initially, this election seemed an easy victory for Naik.
Congress has altogether 15 corporators in NMMC of which 11 are in Belapur and four in Airoli. The numbers indicate that as compared to Airoli, the Congress' presence is stronger in Belapur.

Conceived by Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik and completed under the headship of Sandeep Naik as Standing Committee Chairman of NMMC, the Thane Belapur today has made the nightmarish commute full of potholes and craters a thing of the past.

When NMMC started the work on Thane Belapur Road, commuters had little trust whether the NMMC would live upto the picture it had painted of a smooth drive to Thane for the next 25 years at a stretch. NMMC allocated Rs. 111 Crores for the work and so far Rs. 130 Crores have been spent on the project. And finally today the ride on Thane Belapur Road compels one to believe that every penny of the tax payer’s money spent on the project has been a worthy investment. Initially the concretization work became a means of constant attack on NMMC and the ruling front for the delay in the work and its quality.
Unanimous opinion is that the drive to and fro from this stretch especially for Navi Mumbaikars and Thaneites was never this smooth, no traffic congestion and time saving. With the media keeping a close watch on the work, the NMMC ensured that the work lived up to the promises made to citizens. The six-lane road is so wide enough that many vehicles can pass at a time from either side. And the concretization work has also ensured that motorists do not have to spend extra on maintenance. And there’s more, the authorities are planning to ensure a non-stop drive on this road after averting all the chances of road crossing by the pedestrians. Necessary provisions have been made in the plan of the flyovers so as to facilitate road crossing by vehicles and pedestrians as well, without obstructing the traffic flow on the Thane-Belapur road.

NCP Supremo and Union Agricultural Minister Sharad Pawar urged party workers and Navi Mumbai NCP leaders to forget all about who was given candidature and work for the victory of the party candidates in both the constituencies in Navi Mumbai. The NCP has fielded Ganesh Naik in Belapur constituency and Sandeep Naik in the Airoli constituency.

Post delimitation, Ganesh Naik’s original constituency has been divided into 5 constituencies viz. Thane Rural, Mumbra-Kausa, Meera Bhayander, Airoli and Belapur. During the last assembly elections Ganesh Naik created a record of sorts in the state by winning in this constituency with a record margin of nearly 1 lac 18 thousand votes. When delimitation happened, the political aspirants of both Congress and NCP from these areas became hopeful of running for elections. No points for guessing, that with this started clashes between leaderships within each party. In some cases, the clash within party leadership became so fierce that it became a headache for the party high commands. And no matter how much the Supremos of both the Congress and NCP tried, post declaration of candidatures, rebels and disgruntled elements have surfaced in both the parties. In Navi Mumbai, several ticket hopefuls both in Congress and NCP were upset when the names of Ganesh Naik from Belapur and Sandeep Naik from Airoli were declared. One of the NCP leaders who had demanded candidature from Airoli was Mathadi leader Narendra Patil. However, later he consented to Sandeep Naik’s candidature. And even though some still continued speculations that the Mathadi faction was upset, Narendra Patil came out in full support of the decision of the party to give candidatures to Ganesh Naik and Sandeep Naik. During Sharad Pawar’s visit to APMC, Narendra Patil said that as Labour Minister Ganesh Naik has worked for the workers class and now that Sandeep Naik is contesting the elections, the Mathadis will ensure that Sandeep Naik is elected with a thumping majority from Airoli constituency.

On the other, NCP Belapur candidate Ganesh Naik informed NCP Supremo Sharad Pawar about his how he got the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan’s approval for the 2.5 FSI for CIDCO dilapidated apartments and SRA applicable for Navi Mumbai. Sharad Pawar too sent out a message to all the disgruntled elements in the NCP party and urged them to forget who was given candidature or why is NCP fighting from less seats.

The Maratha strongman also voiced confidence that the Mathadi workers and leaders will stand behind Ganesh Naik and Sandeep Naik during the elections. Sharad Pawar underlined the need of both the Congress and NCP party workers and leaders to work with unity to ensure that the secular alliance came back to power.

"I will not call it rebellious, because they have not filed the nomination papers and even after filing the papers, they can withdraw the same. If these people stick to their stand even after withdrawal date, then I will consider them as rebels," Naik said. He also said the people believing in party values will not take such steps since high commands of both the parties have taken seat sharing decision together. "Few days back, Navi Mumbai Congress leaders approached me to insist that I should be contesting from Airoli. I told them that they should express their opinion to their party high command and we will put forth our point of view to our party high command whose decision will be obligatory to us," added Naik. Similarly, he said if the seats would have gone to Congress, he would have not approved rebellion in Navi Mumbai NCP. "This decision is given by party high command and in alliance there is bound to be injustice on someone. Therefore, rebellion is not the solution. It's democracy and any one can contest the election either through some party or as an independent," Naik said.
When questioned about family dynasty being practiced in politics, Naik said, "Apart from creating their own identity, both of my sons Sanjeev and Sandeep have worked for party and on basis of that social work, Sandeep has demanded ticket. Now, it's up to the party bosses to decide whether he is eligible for the same. However, we will support the candidate which will be fielded by the party."

Naik continued, "I believe in my voters from Navi Mumbai who hail from all castes, classes, religions and financial backgrounds. These people are aware of my work and what I stand for. So, I am not at all worried about the result."
On his plans for celebrating the birthday, he said that it would a simple affair this year. "I will be going to the Bavkhaleshwar temple to seek the Lord's blessings at 10 am and will be meeting my friends and party workers till 2 pm."
Born on September 15, 1950, Naik began his political career as a workers' leader in 1970. Barring the assembly polls of 1999, when he parted ways with Shiv Sena, Naik has been representing Navi Mumbai's Belapur seat, considered as the largest assembly constituency in the state before delimitation, for around 15 years. Besides, Naik has been widely credited for helping his son Sanjeev win the Thane Parliamentary seat, said to be traditional stronghold of Shiv Sena, on NCP's ticket.
Expansion of the Thane-Belapur road to bus services to Mumbai from the satellite city are among his visible achievements in recent times.

Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik came to the rescue of city builders and project affected persons. In a decision that has bailed out the construction industry from a deep crisis, Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik approached the Chief Minister’s Office and ensured the CM decision of stay on transfer of PAP plots in Navi Mumbai is revoked. It maybe recalled that in one his ‘janta darbaars’, Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik had assured the city builders of taking up the issue with the Chief Minister after which the decision was taken.

The state had announced the 12.5% scheme to benefit PAPs from whom the state has acquired land for the development of Navi Mumbai. The compensation for taking land for the original landlords came to be known as the 12.5 scheme of CIDCO. It maybe recalled that NMMC Opposition Leader Ramakant Mhatre, who known as a close confidante of the Chief Minister had said that the transfer of PAP plot was against the interest of the PAPs and the reason why he approached the Chief Minister to stay the transfer of plots to PAPs. Making serious allegations of corruption, Ramakant Mhatre added that CIDCO officials were doing a lot of corruption by exploiting the 12.5% PAP scheme.

However, the Builders Association of Navi Mumbai knew one person who could bail them out from their crisis and that’s why a delegation of builders approached Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik during a janta darbaar. The builders informed the Minister about how the stay spelling doom for more than 90% of developmental work in the city being done of 12.5% PAP plots. Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik assured the builders and PAPs that he’d meet the Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and ensured that the stay was lifted. A day after the assurance, the Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik met the Chief Minister and the stay was lifted. It was a day of double joy for the Navi Mumbai Kerela Samaj as the community was not just celebrating their Onam festival but was also celebrating its successful completion of 25 years. The community held an event at Nerul and celebrated the day with traditional galore. Present to be a part of the celebrations and to inaugurate the silver jubilee celebrations of the community was Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik. He praised the works of the community on the day. He also wished the Kerela community a very happy Onam.

The celebration committee chairman, Mathew Thomas spoke on the objectives of the celebrations. We also caught up with the President of the samaj, K A Kurup. For decades now, the redevelopment issue of CIDCO built JN type apartments in Navi Mumbai has been hanging in the balance. Every election brings new hopes and new promises for the apartment owners and villagers, but all assurances fizz out soon after the elections. This time however someone whose words hold credible value is making the announcement. Our weekend exclusive delves deeper into how Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik’s gift of 2.5 FSI to CIDCO dilapidated buildings has revived the hopes of residents.

Shraddha Apartments Owners Association at Vashi is perhaps the epitome of the tragic tales of how dreams of owning a home turned into nightmares for JN Type apartments owners within years of construction. It was 10 years ago that the JN Type apartments of Shraddha compound were declared unfit for human inhabitance. Today, the CIDCO built apartments have become centers of neglect and apathy. Evidently, apartments’ owners are frustrated with the government.

Those who were shifted by CIDCO in the Juinagar apartments are victims of the bitter realities of an insensitive and apathetic system. For apartment owners of JN Type apartments in Shraddha compound, shifting to Juinagar was suppose to be a make shift arrangement before their real homes were reconstructed. After a decade of waiting, apartment owners have either accepted the rude shock or have become victims of it. What you just heard is more or less the same living conditions for apartment owners living in dilapidated CIDCO apartments. FSI to CIDCO built apartments reeling under dilapidated conditions is perhaps the most burning issue that haunts Navi Mumbai today. And its not like the issue has never been taken up – problem is it’s been taken up far too often; mostly during elections. May be that’s why the victims of CIDCO’s sub standard constructed apartments are loosing faith but the first ray of hope that they’d get relief from the deplorable living conditions came when Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik had pursued the issue of FSI to CIDCO apartments during the Chief Minister’s visit to Navi Mumbai in June 2009.

And with the Minister persistently following up the matter with the Chief Minister’s office, last week finally came with an announcement that revived the hopes of these residents. The public announcement was made by Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik who informed that the state cabinet had given in-principle approval of 2.5 FSI to dilapidated CIDCO apartments. Post the Guardian Minister’s announcement, a section of people are terming it as just another point to score with the public prior to elections while others says that the prospect of 2.5 FSI to CIDCO buildings isn’t viable – one bone of contention being the infrastructural limitations of Vashi. But Standing Committee Chairman says that it wouldn’t be fair to the apartment owners of JN Type buildings if infrastructure was used as a reason to negate re-development work. He says that when 5 star hotels, educational institutes, central government buildings, constructions in Mumbai are getting 4 FSI and IT plots were turned into commercial complexes around Vashi Railway Station and granted 2.5 to 3 FSI, then why isolate CIDCO buildings case by bringing infrastructural hiccups.

He goes on to explain that the issues related to infrastructure can be tackled if zone development of JN Type apartments is taken up instead of reconstructing single buildings. Citing the example of Ulhasnagar that got 4 FSI, Sandeep Naik says that positive attitude and proper planning will make 2.5 FSI a success for CIDCO built apartments. And even if the infrastructural issues are taken care, there is another obstacle – the case against re-development work pending in High Court.
Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik has already set a precedent on this front with the re-development of C-Type Towers in Sector 1, Vashi. Everyone is aware that despite the obstacles and opposition that the C Type redevelopment project faced, Ganesh Naik pioneered the work and within two years of the demolition of the buildings, the towers were erected. The C Type also became the only reconstructed building to get the NMMC’s OC. At that time speaking to the media, Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik recalled how the apartment owners of C Type had approached him with the issue of the dilapidated conditions of their apartments and he had promised them relief.

Even the apartment owners who got their all news homes had shared with us how their apartments were in dilapidated conditions and after reconstruction they have homes with all new amenities. They gave the credit for this to Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik. Since Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik is a Minister in the state cabinet and is also the Environment Minister, he reads the environment of the residents living in dilapidated CIDCO buildings. While the 2.5 FSI is being viewed as an election gift but with the municipal elections to follow the assembly elections, Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik will have no option but to fulfill his commitment making it a win win situation for apartment owners and common buyers.

A new cabinet decision has revived the hopes of apartment owners living in dilapidated JN 1 and JN 2 type apartments. A day after the Guardian Minister’s Janta Darbar assurance, the state cabinet led by Chief Minister approved 2.5 FSI for CIDCO apartments. A day after Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik assured CIDCO apartment owners of taking up the subject of FSI to JN Type apartments; the state cabinet sanctioned 2.5 FSI for JN 1 and JN 2 Type apartments. The issue was raised by Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik at the state cabinet meeting. The subject of FSI to CIDCO apartments has been pending with the state for over a decade. Every election, FSI promise to JN Type apartments has been a pre-poll assurance that was never fulfilled. However, the cabinet approval of 2.5 FSI has once again revived hopes for the dilapidated CIDCO apartment owners of getting relief sooner than later. After the cabinet meeting, Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik met the media and shared the details of the approval with them. Janta Darbaar held to solve pending issues at CIDCO

Many issues pertaining to the plots of PAPs was discussed in the darbaar.To solve various issues related to CIDCO, Thane Guardian minister Ganesh Naik called for a special meeting of CIDCO authorities at the Janata Darbar. More than two hundred pending issues of CIDCO were discussed during the meeting. Reassuring those present, Thane Guardian minister ganesh Naik stated that he would be taking up the issues with the Chief Minister. Some of the decisions taken on this day were plots for women associations, hawkers associations and educational institutions through NMMC by calling tender. Also the registered association of PAP's should be given first priority in the distribution of plots through CIDCO. He ordered the CIDCO authorities to provide all the facilities to the PAP's whose plots have been taken over by CIDCO for developmental purposes. Redevelopment of old buildings in city

The long wait is finally over. As promised by Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik last week, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan sanctioned some key, long-pending issues that were bothering residents of Navi Mumbai for long.
The main issue remains the sanctioning of additional FSI of 2.5 for residents of JN1 and JN2 buildings in Vashi and permission to rebuild these dilapidated structures, some of which need urgent repairs.
Residents of JN1 and JN2 are rejoicing over the announcement made by state government. Ex-corporator Kishore Patkar said, "It was a long-pending proposal and residents of these buildings were waiting for last 15 years for a decision in this matter. We are indebted to Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik who kept his word and followed up on the matter regularly."
Naik held a meeting with the Chief Minister on Friday to discuss the issues at length and got the pending proposals sanctioned. Till last week, residents were upset with the delay in sanctioning these proposals but yesterday's announcement has brought cheer among thousands of residents who believe these sanctions will surely boost the development of the satellite city as a number of developers will now show interest in redeveloping the old houses constructed by City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). Since then, congratulatory messages have been pouring in at Naik's residence and office.
Naik, during a previous press conference, had announced that he was pursuing the pending issues with the CM since 2007 and promised that an announcement in this regard was due before the code of conduct is applied for the upcoming assembly elections.

Ganesh Pedamkar, a resident of JN2 type apartment said, "We are happy that the Guardian Minister took the initiative and fought the cause. Although late, the decision will definitely benefit a large number of residents who will get bigger and better homes to reside in if and when the buildings are reconstructed. Our homes are old and we had to spend a large amount of money on repairs but the housing societies will now be more eager to approach developers and make optimum use of the additional FSI."

Both the hospitals will be constructed by Supreme Infrastructure India Ltd. There are many middle class families living in Nerul and Airoli who during any medical emergencies had to either rush to the hospital at Vashi or private hospitals. These two hospitals will bring relief to them. A blood storage centre was also inaugurated at hospital. Assuring the resident of all legal help, Naik offered the services of an experienced advocate to represent the residents in the High Court. In an emotion-packed speech. Naik said, “We are with you at every step. If required, we will even knock Supreme Court doors and get the streets to fight for your justice”. He also assured resident s that NMMC will not undertake and demolition drive till monsoon.
Corporator Vithal more urged residents to volunteer and residents to form a committee comprising representatives of various row sensitive’s of various row house associations in these sectors to attend to the problem. The committee members are likely to hold a meeting in next couple of days to file an appeal letter to be submitted in the High Court in Monday.
NMMC survey had revealed that over 80 pc row house owners have made extensions in their homes without due permission from the civic body, clearly violating FSI rules in the process. The civic body undertook the survey in response to RTI plea and a HC ruling.

The NMMC Standing Committee approved the last phase of work inside condominiums worth nearly Rs. 37 Crore this week. Approvals of nearly Rs. 33 Crore for executing work inside condominiums is going to bring major relief to apartments owners living in unhygienic and pathetic environs within CIDCO condominiums. The biggest issue of CIDCO condominiums is the decade’s old sewerage and water pipelines. Most residents living within condominiums hail from economically weaker background and could not carry out timely repair and maintenance work. And the increasing population only aggravated these civic issues. Since, NMMC did not have a policy in place to spend funds inside CIDCO condominiums, the conditions of water and sewerage pipelines became worse by the day, raising grave health issues for residents. In wake of the gravity of the issue, Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik followed up the matter with the Chief Minister’s office and finally got a policy in place that permitted NMMC to carry out civic work inside condominiums. Soon after major allocations were made NMMC budgets and this week’s Standing Committee meeting sealed the final phase of civic work to be carried out within condominiums within city limits. After the members approved 30 proposals to carry out work within condominiums worth Rs. 37 Crore 17 lakhs 27 thousand 422, Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik informed the need to carry out the work inside condominiums and how NMMC got the approval for these work. The Chairman said that they were happy that finally work of tax paying citizens living within condominiums was undertaken in the city. The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation will be utilizing funds granted under the JNNURM for this work.

Thane District Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik has agreed to intervene and find an amicable solution to the burning issue of illegal extensions in row houses of sector 6, 7 and 8 in Vashi. The decision came after some residents approached the minister for help. Naik is expected to hold a meeting with both aggrieved residents of the row houses and officials of the NMMC in the next two days to resolve the matter, sources confirmed.This has brought some relief to residents of these row houses who have been spending sleepless nights ever since NMMC began the survey and started issuing notices to families, who had extended their properties. The row houses were built by CIDCO at least 20 years ago and residents say the repairs or extensions were carried out to protect the poor constructions. NMMC, in its notice, has threatened to demolish the extensions after a month, if the residents do not make necessary corrections. Mangala Deshpande, a senior citizen residing in Sector 7 said, "Every year during the rains, our doors would get damaged since water splashes on the door. We had to bear a lot of expense hence we installed sheets on doors and windows. Also, it was not possible for a retired, aged person like me to climb up the stairs to go to the bathroom, so we shifted it to the ground floor. Are these illegal constructions? The NMMC is doing all this only to harass residents and fleece money. Thane District Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik took representatives of various junior colleges to task for not attending the interactive session called by him on Friday at NMSA.
After arriving nearly two-and-half hours late for a meeting which was to begin at 9.30 am, Naik asked NMMC officials to read out the names of colleges, who did not send their representatives for the meeting. The college representatives were even asked to sign their attendance before the meeting began. Naik then instructed CIDCO officials to speak to authorities of those colleges who did not attend the meeting and seek an explanation.
Once again, Naik requested college authorities to consider the pleas of students from poor background. With an eye on the upcoming elections, Naik reiterated the same tune and insisted that educational institutions should give concession to needy and poor students. "I understand that running an educational institution is not easy, but they should try and reduce the amount for those who can not afford the high donations," he said.
Naik pointed at the increasing number of complaints from parents and students during the Janata Darbar and complained that some haughty principals from prestigious private institutes don't even look at the recommendation letters sent by him. "Are they above the system? They don't think it necessary to attend a meeting called by the guardian minister, civic chief and top police officials? Some schools behave like corporates and think in terms of profit and loss," he questioned.
He also urged principals to consider giving admission to poor students which is part of their social responsibility. "At times, authorities simply throw the request letters into dustbin. Many parents are unable to afford fees and hence they seek our help. Schools in Navi Mumbai who have received land from CIDCO at concessional rates must give preference to the sons-of-soil," he said. The city bus commuters travelling to Bandra can enjoy a cool ride. On July 4, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) inducted five new air- conditioned Volvo buses in its fleet, to ply from the bus depot here to Bandra (W), which later may even be extended to SEEPZ.
State Excise and Environment Minister Ganesh Naik, MLC Manda Mhatre, State Transport Commissoner Deepak Kapoor, NMMT outgoing chairman Sasi Damodaran, NMMC Standing Committee Chairman Sandeep Naik and other dignitaries attended the inauguration function.
The air- conditioned Volvo buses are being run between here and Bandra covering a total distance of 35.5 kms within 85 to 90 minutes. The frequency of the buses will be 18 minutes and the fare is Rs45. The main stops apart from Belapur and Bandra are Uran Phata, D Y Patil college , Suman Nagar and Mohammed Rafi Chowk.
NMMT’s foray into Mumbai’s Queen of Suburbs is in itself an achievement of sorts for the Undertaking as it had to face stiff opposition from the BEST administration for the last many years. Ganesh Naik appreciated the efforts of the entire official who made this happen in spite of the hurdle. He also urged Volvo official to supply non-air conditioned buses as well to cater to the poor so that they too may travel in comfort at affordable price.
“Keeping the future growth of Navi Mumbai, the proposed airport and other projects in mind, NMMT must start operating these buses from Navi Mumbai to Santacruz to connect the two airports and tap this profitable market before others do. Such a service will also help boost weekend tourism in the city,” said Kapoor.
“Five Volvo city buses have been delivered to NMMT, and fifteen more will be delivered this month itself “, said Volvo buses India Ltd MD Akash Passey. He further added,”The fare is only 25 to 30 per cent higher the ordinary buses. The emissions are much lower.
Taking all the advantages into consideration, the buses are apt for travel within city and will help bring down congestion as commuters will not mind leaving their cars and bikes behind to travel by this bus.”
“Following passengers’ requests we decided to start plying buses from Belapur to Bandra as this is a very important route.”
It is also gathered that NMMT is planning to start bus services from the city to Dadar and Mantralaya, once the once the newly started service gets good response.

NMMT has started AC buses for the Navi Mumbai to Bandra route. The services were inaugurated at the hands of Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik. NMMT has purchased twenty Volvo buses out of which at present 5 buses will ply between CBD Belapur to Bandra every 30 minutes. The fare of the buses would be double. He further also spoke on the kind of services that the buses will provide.

Also present the State Transport Commissioner Deepak Kapoor called this a historical achievement. We also spoke with the MD of Volvo Pvt. Ltd. Akash Paasi. Apart from being air-conditioned the buses have other features too. With suspension in the buses, it would be less bumpy rides with capacity being more than regular buses. CCTVs are also installed in the buses. With an objective to eliminate the examination fear among students appearing for the forthcoming SSC board examination and to develop confidence within them, Navi Mumbai Shikshan Sankul, in coordination with the NCP, conducted a practice examination in the month of December, especially for the Marathi medium schools.
The innovative practice examination concept of NCP corporator Anant Sutar received an overwhelming response from 48 schools and more than 8,000 students had appeared for the exam, which were conducted at 10 centres across the city.
The results were declared on January 30, and meritorious students from each of the 10 centres were felicitated by the hands of MP and Rajya Sabha member Supriya Sule at a grand function held at Vishnudas Bhave auditorium in Vashi.
The top three students in the city were Nilima Khaire of Vivekanand High School, Sanpada, who topped the merit list by scoring 92.30 percent, Harshal Ahire of MGM High School, Nerul, stood second with 91.53 percent and Reshma Hussain Shaikh made it to the third position by securing 91.15 percent.
The other students were bestowed with a trophy and an appreciation certificate. This Sunday, “Green Hope’ will conduct a tree plantation drive where in 2 lac trees will be planted across Navi Mumbai and the Thane Belapur Industrial Belt. Green Hope made its greening debut last year when it planted near about a lac trees in Navi Mumbai and the adjacent industrial belt.

Airoli college asks student to get Guardian Minister to call personally; Naik does so on the spot at Janata DarbarForget about letters signed by local corporators, the school authorities are also refusing to entertain a letter written by Thane District Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik. In one such incident, a letter written by Naik, submitted by one of the students seeking admission in FYJC, was turned down by the Airoli institution. The college asked the student to get the Guardian Minister to make a personal call to the college authorities to put in a request.
Koparkhairane resident Rajesh Tiwari (name changed on request) wanted admission in Airoli-based New Horizon Junior College and so he submitted a letter signed by Naik to the college for getting admission in the management quota. However, the authorities told Tiwari that the written letter would be of no help and that it would take a personal call from the senior politician himself.
Accordingly, Tiwari approached Naik, who is also State Minister for Excise, Environment and Labour at his Janta Darbar at Vishnudas Bhave Hall, Vashi on Friday. "Since the letter had no effect, we have come here to meet Naik personally and request him to make a phone call to the college," stated Tiwari, who has secured 70 percent marks in the SSC exam, and is seeking admission in Science stream. The college's cut-off is 75 percent.
Naik responded positively to the visitor's request by promptly calling the college authority on the spot and personally requested in favour of the student. The Minister coolly told the student that he should now go to the college on Monday for the necessary follow-up and the jubilant student, and his parents, left the Janata Darbar satisfied.
With the admission season on, a majority of the attendees at the Janta Darbar comprised of students and their parents, who were keen on the Minister's intervention to help them secure an admission in the college of their choice. There were also a handful of the usual visitors at the public gathering, putting forth issues ranging from poor bus connectivity in the nodes and bad condition of roads, to labour problems in local industries and civic mismanagement at the micro-level. With an expenditure of Rs. 91 lakhs, NMMC has built this advanced one floored school building at Turbhe stores. The school includes 19 classes out of which 17 are for classrooms, one for staff room and one for a computer lab. Labour and Enviornment Minsiter Ganesh Naik has ordered the proper rehabilitation of an estimation of an estimated hawkers who have been displaced by the ongoing work of Sanpada-Palm Beach Flyover.

Among those who have lost theirs means of livelihood were vegetable vendors and some women’s self help groups. On 10 January, they went with their grievances to labour minister Ganesh Naik immediately directed NMMC that the affected persons be provided with a suitable plot where they can continue their businesses.

“They should be rehabilitated in the same manner as the Project Affected Persons (PAPs),” the minister told the NMMC officials present on the spot.

Thane guardian minister, Ganesh Naik has brought some respite to the property holders in the city by ordering a stay on the notices issued by municipal commissioner Vijay Nahata to pay up additional property tax to those utilizing additional floor space index (FSI), permitted by CIDCO.
Speaking at the specially convened press meet at CIDCO guest house, Naik Said Municipal Commissioner Nahata has issued notices regarding the payment of additional property tax to property holders within the NMMC jurisdiction, Comprising residential, Commercial and Industrial users, Who have been using additional FSI, Nahata issued the order since it was mandatory as per resolution passed in the general body meeting.”
Naik further assured, “The tax payers will not be burdened with the additional property tax and for that purpose, the NMMC administration has been asked to prepare a revised and rectified proposal, which should be approved in the general body meeting. Meanwhile, it is justified that those using additional FSI, pay the additional FSI, pay the additional Property tax. For example, if someone has a 500 square Feet Flat and are paying Rs.50 as property tax. If they utilize an additional FSI of 100 sq ft. it is mandatory for them to pay an additional property tax of Rs 10 as per the rate able Value.”
Meanwhile, Naik has assured during the elections that there will be no increase in property tax for the coming 20 Years. Now, Since NMMC has increased the rateable value and served notices to the additional FSI users to pay up additional property tax, the citizens are perplexed about NMMC’s Decision.

Naik had urged the citizens to co-operate by paying additional property tax for using additional FSI, which he says is mandatory. Naik even asked the NMMC to levy the old rate able value of the property on those who have reconstructed old and dilapidated buildings and have utilized the same area. He even advised the citizens that those who have built additional FSI and have not obtained the Mandatory Occupancy Certificate and/or Commencement Certificate; they should obtain it at the earliest and fulfill the legal terms for making their constructions authorized.

The two core committees constituted by the excise and environment minister Ganesh Naik, in order to draw the road map for infrastructural developments in Navi Mumbai.

Naik who is also the guardian minister of thane level meeting on January 8 at Mantralaya and announced the formation of two core committees for planning and executing all major development projects in the satellite city. The minister had announced that a committee headed by GS Gill will consist of the chiefs of police, MIDC, MTDC, MSRDC, NMMC, etc, and will define the policies for developing major infrastructure facilities in Navi Mumbai in accordance to international standards. The minister has conceived the idea of developing single tier fly over roads parallel to Thane-Belapur road, Palm Beach road and Nerul-Uran road, besides a new six lane roads earmarked for linking Navi Mumbai with the proposed airport at Panvel. Innovative plans are on the anvil to promote tourism industry in the city and to develop the water transport service between Alibaug and Navi Mumbai.

The projection is made on the expected population growth for the next 25 years,” says Birajdar.
The deputy mayor claimed that fund is not a constraint in the proposed development works when many industrialists have come forward to execute the projects on BOT basis. “The meeting was conspicuous with the presence of representatives of giant industrialists like Reliance and Herdillia chemicals. Reliance has shown interest in financing infrastructural projects on BOT basis. The core committee will decide the future course of action in appropriate time,” informs Birajdar.

Birajdar disclosed that the main thrust of constituting the committee was to avoid inordinate delay in policy making and implementation of important development projects. “The frequent sitting of the committees will develop increased coordination among various head of departments. This will save time and will help to complete all the projects in due time”

Both CIDCO managing director GS Gill and NMMC commissioner Vijay Nahata could not be reached for comments. As the committees have been announced by minister Naik, their statutory authority and jurisdiction is still unheard, says a senior NMMC official on condition of anonymity. “Unless a government notification comes, we cannot comment on the constitution and statutory powers of the committees. They are just informal bodies, which cannot decide on policy matters,” Sanjeev Naik informs.

The controversial so called stadium of NMMC was finally inaugurated in a ceremony at CBD Belapur in the presence of State Minister for Excise and Environment Ganesh Naik and MLC Manda Mhatre.

Situated at CBD Belapur; this project that started off as a stadium and is now a sport and commercial complex has made political headlines more often than not. The stadium is the brainchild of MLC Manda Mhatre and her son former corporator Nilesh Mhatre. The stadium was first proposed at the Late Rajeev Gandhi Playground at CBD Belapur when MLC Manda Mhatre was a corporator. Later on the project’s foundation stone was laid when her son Nilesh Mhatre was elected as corporator at NMMC and MLC Manda Mhatre contributed Rs. 10 lacs for it from her MLC funds. And finally, the project has been completed in the tenure of local corportaor Dr. Jayaji Nath. Built on an area of 2100 sq. meter, this sports complex has 28 shops as well. While much work of the sports complex is still to be completed, the first phase was inaugurated at the hands of State Excise and Environment Minister and Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik in a ceremony held at the complex. The leader also acknowledged the work done by the NMMC administration in giving CBD Belapur this amenity.

Ironic to the very controversial bhumipujan of the stadium a few years ago, the inaugural ceremony was a complete contrast with Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik sharing the dais with MLC Manda Mhatre. During her address, MLC Manda Mhatre shared with Minister Ganesh Naik how the idea of the project was conceived.

Exactly three months after the 26/11 terror attacks on the city, martyr cop Vijay Salaskar’s widow made a strong, heartfelt appeal to politicians to get their act together so that there were no more 26/11 repeats in the country.

Smita Salaskar, the widow of encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar spoke at a function organized by the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation in Vashi to honour the families of 18 policemen and armymen killed in the terror attacks. They were given cheques of Rs 5 lakh each by Thane’s Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik. Salaskar’s wife stated that blasts and terror attacks have been happening consistently since 1993, but the police were still using outdated weapons to ensure their city’s and nation’s security, creating unfortunate “veer matas and veer patnis’’. Vineeta Kamte, widow of slain additional commissioner of police Ashok Kamte, was unable to make it to the venue. So Navi Mumbai police commissioner Ramrao Wagh accepted the cheque on her behalf. Many were seen crying silently as they remembered the martyrs at the function. The others who came to Vashi to accept the honour were Kavita Karkare, widow of Hemant Karkare, Mansi Shinde, Madhavi More, Vandana Ombale, widow of Tukaram Omble, who died in the Marine Drive encounter, Bhikaji Jadhav and others. Devotees Spellbound at grand celebration of Mahashivratri at Bhavkaleshwar Temple a vision of Ganesh Naik

On the 24th of January 2007, a temple on the hills of the city was embedded to add to the city’s divine grace. The Bhavkaleshwar temple, a vision of Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik saw the celebration of Mahashivratri in a grand style. Devotees were spellbound at the magnificent structure and the celebrations.
The Bhavkaleshwar temple at Khairane evokes blessed feelings as one, steps into it. And there is more to the reason of building the temple in the midst of the quarries than what meets the eyes. Nearly 15 years ago the Naik family had found a stone in the shape of Lord Nandi and since then it was worshiped at the temple sight. However, after Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik’s wife saw a dream, the leader decided to build a temple here. The temple construction work which was on for a decade saw the personal involvement of GM Ganesh Naik. The temple is built on an area of nearly 2000 sq. ft. A diya bought from Madras is another highlight of the temple. The temple came alive during the Mahashivratri celebrations when devotees flocked to it in great numbers. The festival of Shivartri is celebrated in the honor of Lord Shiva on the thirteenth or fourteenth day during the month of February or March. Maha Shivratri means “the big night of Lord Shiva” and during the entire night devotees worship Lord Shiva. Hundreds of people stood in queue before the temple with flowers, leaves, coconuts to worship Lord Shiva. The devotees, spellbound with the magnificent structure, showed their gratitude towards Thane Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik who was present during the celebrations along with Former Mayor Sanjeev Naik.
Present amongst the devotees were many prominent names and dignitaries of Navi Mumbai which included NMMC Education Committee Chairman Ravi Iyer, NCP Nerul Block President Ashok Gawde, DCP R D Shinde and ACP Purushottum Karad. It is only on this great day that this temple witnesses a huge crowd and an elaborate day and night-long worship. The celebration was a grand one leaving the devotees spellbound.
