The two core committees constituted by the excise and environment minister Ganesh Naik, in order to draw the road map for infrastructural developments in Navi Mumbai.
Naik who is also the guardian minister of thane level meeting on January 8 at Mantralaya and announced the formation of two core committees for planning and executing all major development projects in the satellite city. The minister had announced that a committee headed by GS Gill will consist of the chiefs of police, MIDC, MTDC, MSRDC, NMMC, etc, and will define the policies for developing major infrastructure facilities in Navi Mumbai in accordance to international standards. The minister has conceived the idea of developing single tier fly over roads parallel to Thane-Belapur road, Palm Beach road and Nerul-Uran road, besides a new six lane roads earmarked for linking Navi Mumbai with the proposed airport at Panvel. Innovative plans are on the anvil to promote tourism industry in the city and to develop the water transport service between Alibaug and Navi Mumbai.
The projection is made on the expected population growth for the next 25 years,” says Birajdar.
The deputy mayor claimed that fund is not a constraint in the proposed development works when many industrialists have come forward to execute the projects on BOT basis. “The meeting was conspicuous with the presence of representatives of giant industrialists like Reliance and Herdillia chemicals. Reliance has shown interest in financing infrastructural projects on BOT basis. The core committee will decide the future course of action in appropriate time,” informs Birajdar.
Birajdar disclosed that the main thrust of constituting the committee was to avoid inordinate delay in policy making and implementation of important development projects. “The frequent sitting of the committees will develop increased coordination among various head of departments. This will save time and will help to complete all the projects in due time”
Both CIDCO managing director GS Gill and NMMC commissioner Vijay Nahata could not be reached for comments. As the committees have been announced by minister Naik, their statutory authority and jurisdiction is still unheard, says a senior NMMC official on condition of anonymity. “Unless a government notification comes, we cannot comment on the constitution and statutory powers of the committees. They are just informal bodies, which cannot decide on policy matters,” Sanjeev Naik informs.
